Green Cove Springs is the County Seat of Clay County, which is adjacent to Jacksonville. It was originally known as White Sulphur Springs, and famous for its Mineral Springs, located right next to the Saint Johns River.
In the second half of the 19th century, there were several majestic and famous hotels. Rich people from the north visited in large numbers as it was believed that the springs contained water with healing and restorative powers. Large Paddle Wheeler Steamships delivered wealthy families and the city of Green Cove Springs flourished. Many of the visitors chose to make Green Cove Springs their home due to the year round warm weather and local attractions.
During World War II, the area transformed into a military based economy. Naval Station Lee Field was creted just south of the city and became a major base. It became known as Naval Station Green Cove Springs and became a major part of the Navy’s Mothball Fleet installations, with many ships stored there. The area still has a strong nautical industry that employs hundredsof people.
In today’s Green Cove Springs, the economy is rapidly expanding. The County Government has grown significantly, and there are numerous rental homes, apartments and homes for sale.
